W is for Wasted by Sue Grafton

A homeless man died on the beach. Nothing that would interest Kinsey, except that he had her phone number in his pocket, a man she’d never met. With business being slow, and being the curious person she is, the had to find out who he was. But, as with many mysteries, little is as it seems. This story takes some odd and unexpected turns as Kinsey investigates.

In this book, Kinsey confronts past associates as unrelated stories begin to interlock. Kinsey gets to know some homeless people, Sue Grafton give them full and interesting characters that feel real.

Another portion of the book involves Kinsey’s relatives. She encounters relatives on her father’s side and starts to address he thoughts about family and her independence again.

The book moves well and has interesting characters and plot lines. It is a must for anyone reading the series, and would make a good stand-alone mystery.

V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton

This is the 22nd book in the Kinsey Millhone Mysteries. The books are holding up, but the setting is lagging behind real time. The book mostly takes place in 1988, starting for Kinsey when she notices a small-time shoplifter. In the typical Grafton style, Kinsey gets wrapped up in the events and must look into things. The shoplifting leads her into a big-time racketeering ring.

I have two complaints about the book, first is that Sue Grafton is moving the series away from traditional mysteries. Starting with the previous book, U is for Undertow, it seems to be moving more toward adventure, as the reader knows so much more about the crime than Kinsey does. The book wanders through three different plots that ultimately intertwine. But the reader cannot play detective and try to solve it as Kinsey does.

The second issue is that Kinsey neglected to check surveillance tapes from the scene of the initial shoplifting. Although she had reason not to be interested in them initially, events changed and she seemed to forget about them for too long. It was a plot device to help build suspense, but in my opinion, was inappropriate. This did not detract from the enjoyment of the book.

Overall, it is an enjoyable book and left me looking forward to the next installment.

U is for Undertow by Sue Grafton

U is for Undertow by Sue GraftonAfter more than 20 years, a young man appears at Kinsey’s office and asks her to investigate something he saw. Two men burying something when he was six years old. He believes it was related to a 20-year old kidnapping turned murder. During the investigation, they find a pet dog buried in the hold and that the man has a history of manipulation and a penchant for lying. However, the twists and turns lead to an interesting investigation and the death of the young man.

This is the 21st book in the alphabet murder series, and it is as good as any of them. The book is well written and engaging, the mystery is good. Side issues abound in Kinsey’s life, and this time her love interests are absent but her new relations are involved again as she learns more about her aunt/guardian and distant relatives.

Now I’m patiently waiting for V.

T is for Trespass by Sue Grafton

T is for Trespass by Sue GraftonThis is, or was, the latest Kinsey Millhone mystery. Kinsey has a few cases in this book, but they drag her, as usual, deep into a mystery. This one involves the care provided for an elderly neighbor.

These are always good stories and I can recommend them.
