The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz

This is the first book of the Spellmans. They are a normal family, with a family business of investigation. But they spend most of the time investigating each other. Blackmail, spying, bribery, and other black arts are a regular part of their interaction. The book is very funny and I can strongly recommend it.

The Pirates!: An Adventure with Scientists & An Adventure with Ahab by Gideon Defoe

Another great book!  The Pirate Captain has bought a boat from Cutlass Liz and payment is due! The captain comes up with hair-brained, and hilarious, schemes to gain the funds and save his crew. The characters are wonderfully odd, Defoe has a great sense of humor.  This is a must read for anyone!!

Pirates interact with Darwin and The Beagle in a wild deviation from history.

Defoe has a wonderful ability to tell a story!

First Man: The Life of Neil Armstrong by James R. Hansen

First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong by James R. HansenI really enjoyed the history behind the moon landing and Neil Armstrong.  I remember the moon landing, but never knew the man.  All the details were fascinating, and made for a good flow through his life, but also seemed tedius at times.  At the same time, I’d like to know a little more of his life outside of his career and how that influenced him.
Some of the narration seemed weak.  James Hansen obviously tried to bring the story full circle at the end, but the feeling was almost contrived (I won’t spoil it…).
